CountySpot Blog

Most of the early part of 2015 was spent enjoying our new surroundings in Martin and Palm Beach Counties of South Florida. Since we recently re-located to southern Florida everything we saw and did was new and we got a bit swamped with updates on our exploration and information. It's also very hard to find time to sit at the computer when surrounded with all that South Florida has to offer!

Since we have been here we have enjoyed a lot of time just sitting on the beach on Jupiter Island which offers some of the clearest blue water you can find. The beaches of the Hobe Sound area of Martin County are perfect for relaxation as they are not overly crowded and easy to access.

Endangered sea turtles are very important down here and you can just imagine how exciting it was for us to find one nesting on the beach during a stroll along Jupiter Island beach in late May! We had noticed many of the wooden stakes and flags that indicate turtles had come ashore and nested, but actually watching (without disturbing) was really cool.

Of course one of the best parts of being in the Martin and Palm Beach county area is the access to boats and boating so we have also spent alot of time exploring the intracoastal waterway. From watching the many drawbridges raising and sailboats sailing, or just hanging out on the sandbars in the middle of the water this is a great place to be "knee-deep" in the water!

Since it had been awhile since our last County Spot road trip we decided to take a little journey from our new base of operations in Hobe Sound, Florida to North Carolina. Our final destination in North Carolina was once again the Franklinton area, but we decided it was time to take an alternate route and explore some of southern North Carolina on the way. The first leg of our trip left us no time for real sight seeing as we ran straight up I-95 from Florida to Santee South Carolina where we stopped for the night.

In the morning we started off around Santee, SC taking some photos of the town and nearby Lake Marion, marking it as a place we would like to return for further exploration. We then needed to keep heading north so we crossed Lake Marion and then left I-95 to start on our sight seeing adventure. We traveled across route 15 and 341 to connect to US 1 which we took through the remainder of South Carolina into North Carolina. Along the way we collected photos of Chesterfield County SC and the town of Cheraw which will soon be added to our photo gallery.

rockinghamUS Route 1 through northern South Carolina and Northern North Carolina is a very nice ride through scenic country and passes through many small towns along the way. We were also exicted to get a glimpse of the Rockingham Speedway which looms quite large as you pass through the quiet countryside outside Rockingham NC.

bluestarOur afternoon drive continued through Aberdeen NC into Sanford NC where we stopped for a bite to eat. We collected many new photos of several North Carolina counties in between. Following our food break we continued up US 1 right through Raleigh and Wake Forest before reaching our destination near Franklinton. Watch for new information and photos from our journey to be added soon!

Florida to NCFlorida to NC PART 2

January of 2014 provided an opportunity to travel once again to the sunshine state and we took advantage of the visit to do some County Spotting as usual. Our exploration was mainly focused on Martin County Fl where we toured Tequesta, Hobe Sound, Jensen Beach and Stuart seeking out photos and information for the Martin County Spot. We visited almost all of the historical sites in Martin County which have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and captured some great photos for the Martin County site.

Stuart Welcome Arch (2)As we traveled in and around Martin County we also collected many new events and other places of interest in Martin County. Watch for the Martin County Spot to get tons of new information for those interested in this beautiful south Florida county.

Cumberland MD (1)We had another extensive County Spot roadtrip planned for the end of December which was to take us exploring through a portion of Maryland and then on towards west Virginia for exploration of several new counties for our directories. These plans met with some resistance when we were rear-ended while sitting at a red light in Cumberland Maryland!

With a battered vehicle and sore necks we decided that we would have to postpone the West Virginia exploration and sadly ended our trip having only collected some new photos and information for our newest Maryland county of Allegany. The Allegany County Spot is now online!
