CountySpot Blog

On our second day of our Road Trip towards the Outer Banks we set our sights on the state of Delaware for exploration. A morning check of the weather showed some fast approaching storms and rain that was coming in from the west and would be making pretty much the whole state of Delaware a grey and wet place so we had to change our plans a bit. We bypassed some of northern Delaware after leaving North East Maryland and made a bee line towards New Castle County DE. We did some quick exploration around Middletown and Townsend before heading south to stay ahead of the weather. See what we found in New Castle County at the New Castle County Spot.

By the time we arrived in Kent County DE we thought we had some time on the weather and we decided to spend a bit more time in this county. We didn't stay in Dover for long, since it deserves it's own visit at a later time, but we explored many other towns and villages of Kent County, including Smyrna, Harrington and Felton as we worked our way south on Route 13. Visit the Kent County Spot to see photos and information collected in Kent County.

Continuing south on 13 we entered Sussex County and explored Bridgeville, Seaford and Laurel on our journey south. Stop by the Sussex County Spot to learn more about this part of Delaware.

As we approached the southern end of Delaware the weather we had been running from all day finally caught us. Rain started falling as we crossed back into Maryland near Delmar which resulted in the end of our photography for a while. We even stopped in Salisbury MD hoping to wait it out for a while, but the rains continued so we decided to continue south towards the Bay Bridge Tunnel, hoping for clear skies ahead. About 80 miles south near the Accomac and Northampton county line in Virginia it finally cleared up enough to allow for more pictures of our journey. Visit the Accomack County Spot to see those pictures, as well as a ton of photos that we collected as we made our way across, and under, the Chesapeake Bay!

Virginia was quickly crossed to save time for Currituck and Dare counties in Nort Carolina as we zoomed around Norfolk on the Hampton Roads Beltway and then south on the Chesapeake Expressway towards our day two destination, The Outer Banks of North Carolina. Once we hit Currituck county we collected additional photos, including shots from Moyock, Grandy, Jarvisburg and Point Harbor. Visit the Currituck County Spot for more information and photos of Currituck County, NC.

As day two of our County Spot Road Trip was winding down we crossed the Wright Memorial Bridge and got our first look at the Outer Banks. A short drive down North Virginia Dare Trail and we had arrived in Kitty Hawk NC to set up our base camp for Dare County exploration!

CountySpot Directories took a lengthy roadtrip in June of 2013 which resulted in a ton of new photos and information for our directory sites. The trip, which would ultimately lead us to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and back to Pennsylvania, was planned in several stages, the first of which was primarily through northern Maryland on June 17, 2013.

Warfordsburg PA (1)The trip began with our first stop being in the small town of Warfordsburg in Fulton County, PA. Warfordsburg was one of the few towns left in Fulton County that we hadn’t at least passed through and we wanted to grab some photos of Warfordsburg PA for the Fulton.PA.CountySpot. After finishing up in Pennsylvania we traveled along some back roads into Maryland where we explored six counties before the end of the day!

Our first Maryland County for the road trip was Washington County and the town of Hancock. We gathered numerous pictures in and around Hancock, including a very cool shot along the Maryland Rail Trail project. Our travels then led us on a route along the Potomac River through several small towns like Big Pool and Clear Springs. Then we actually went off track and discovered Fort Frederick State Park. This interested us so much that we stopped and spent several hours taking a tour of the fort, which included a history lesson from the staff. Fort Frederick is a very interesting place, full of history and is highly recommended as a place to mark as a must see for Washington County MD. Photos of Fort Frederick State Park will be posted soon at the Washington.MD.CountySpot. After finishing up at Fort Frederick we continued along the Potomac and also visited Williamsport to collect photos and information. We then traveled briefly through Hagerstown, marking it for a return trip due to the size of the city and number of places we needed to cover there and continued into our next Maryland County of this trip.

This week-end CountySpot spent some time in and around the Louisburg North Carolina area as we worked to gather historical and town photos and information for our Franklin.NC.CountySpot site. We visited some interesting places on this quick tour as we filled photo needs for upcoming articles for that site.

One of the coolest places was the historic Laurel Mill, a mid-1800s, privately-owned water mill which is visible from the bridge over Sandy Creek in northeastern Franklin County, North Carolina. We also visited the oldest house in Franklin County, The Person Home, along main street in Louisburg. Visit the Franklin County NC Spot to check out the photos, or learn more about Franklin County North Carolina.
