Lee County, Florida

Lee County FL (13)Lee County is located in the south western portion of Florida between Charlotte and Collier Counties. Created in 1887 the county is named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Lee County includes a total of 1,212 square miles. The Caloosahatche River splits Lee County and accounts for much of the 428 square miles of water included in Lee County.

The county seat of Lee County is the city of Fort Myers, although the largest municipality of Lee County is the city of Cape Coral. Cape Coral itself has a population of more than 161,000 people. The total population of Lee County was 645,293 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

Lee County's history began with the founding of Fort Myers in 1850 to protect area settlers from Seminole Indian attacks. The fort was also used briefly during the Civil War. Settlers began arriving in earnest during the late 1800's. Fort Myers became an incorporated municipality of Florida in 1885. Upon it's initial creation Lee County also included much of what would become Hendry and Collier Counties. These two counties were split from Lee County in 1923.

Lee County is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the west, Charlotte County FL to the North, Glades County FL to the Northeast, Hendry County FL to the East, and Collier County FL to the South.
