St. John's County was created in 1821 when Florida ceded to the United States and is one of the two original counties of Florida established under the Adams-Onis Treaty negotiated with Spain by US Secretary of State John Adams. St Johns county includes a total area of 822 square miles, 221 of which is water. The overall population of St Johns County as of the 2010 US Census was almost 200,000 person. The county is primarily made up of residential communities. Tourism, primarily associated with historic St. Augustine is the chief economic industry of St Johns County.

The county seat of St Johns County is St. Augustine, the oldest continuosly occupied European established settlement in the continental United States. Many historical places may be found within St Johns County and St Augustine. The county also features the Nationally protected areas: Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, Fort Matanzas National Monument and the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve.

St Johns County is bordered to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, Duval County FL to the north, Flagler County FL to the south, Putnam County FL to the southwest and Clay County FL to the west.

St. Johns County is included in the Jacksonville, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is primarily made up of residential bedroom communities. Tourism, primarily associated with St. Augustine and the many golf courses in the area, is the chief economic industry.
